President Delivers Knee To Groin -- Amnesty Is Coming!
by Steve Elliott, President
President Bush almost made a mistake at his first post-election news conference….He almost forgot to announce that amnesty is on his “list of things that we need to get done.”
Whew! Good thing that reporter reminded him with that last-second question before the closing bell of the press conference! That will really cheer up the grassroots base already demoralized by the abject failure of both the President and the Republican Congress. Actually, it was like a knee to the groin for citizens who have carried the heavy load this year in standing on principle for the security of our nation while the President tried to sell us down the Rio Grande.
Here’s what the President said:
“I think we have a good chance [at passing the amnesty
bill]. Thank you. It's an important issue and I hope we
can get something done on it. I meant to put that in my
list of things that we need to get done.”
Real Political Fallout Over Immigration
Even though all the post-election analysis is focusing on what will happen with the war in Iraq, the President’s comments should be a warning to every concerned American that the most likely place to look for political fallout is the issue of immigration.
A Republican House -- for all its perceived and real ethical and agenda failures -- was without question the last holdout in Washington, D.C., blocking the Senate/President amnesty plan. With Speaker Pelosi and Judiciary Chair Conyers, an amnesty bill in early 2007 seems likely. It will be a difficult fight to keep House Democrats from giving the Senate and the President what they want -- amnesty for 12-20 million illegal aliens.
Border Security Republicans Go Down
The change in House control is compounded by the number of strong border security Congressmen who were defeated at the polls. Let’s be clear -- the Republicans were NOT defeated because of the strong stance some took on border security. The exit polling data shows clearly that it was the Democrats’ ability ot nationalize the election as a referendum of President Bush and the war in Iraq, combined with numerous missteps by Republican Congressional leaders, that caused the changeover. In fact, the exit polling showed that six in 10 Americans are concerned about the problem of illegal immigration.
That said, defeated Republican members of the House averaged 88% on Grassfire’s 2006 Immigration Scorecard -- above the overall average Republican score of 84%. Only one defeated Republican House member scored below 70% and 12 scored 90% or above.
On the Senate side, three of the most closely watched races saw strong border security Republicans get defeated (assuming the last results hold): Allen (VA-100%), Burns (MT-100%), Talent (MO-91%).
Please understand -- exit poll results do not show that border security was the decisive issue in the defeat of these Republican members of Congress. My point is that our hand in the House and Senate just got significantly weaker. (You can access Grassfire’s online Scorecard here:

What’s Next In The Fight To Secure Our Borders
The record of 2006 shows that grassroots Americans stood up to the onslaught of the open borders/amnesty forces. We stared down the President, the Senate, the media and millions of illegal aliens protesting in our streets. I was told by members of House and their staffers that were it not for the efforts of grassroots citizens, House Republicans would not have had the political fortitude to stand up to the amnesty push.
But we just lost our main ally. And with the President bending over backwards to find “common ground” with the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Charles Rangel -- and indicating that immigration was on his “list” -- the fight to secure our borders and stop amnesty just got exponentially more difficult.
In the coming months, citizens like you and me will have to sacrifice even more and work even harder. This will require movement leaders to work together more closely behind the united, common goal of stopping the invasion.
This is no time to shrink back from this battle for the very future of our nation. In fact, Grassfire is already gearing up for the coming fight. I trust you will join with us and millions of citizens who are taking a stand to secure our nation.

Voters Rebuff Bush, Reject Republican Congress
It is clear Republicans in Congress could not overcome two insurmountabler obstacles: President Bush and themselves.
The Exit polls showed that the leading issue was a referendum on the President and the war in Iraq. 57 percent of exit pollers disapproved of the job President Bush is doing and 56 percent disapprove of the war in Iraq. More specifically, 55 percent -- a strong majority -- want the U.S. to pull out some or all of our troops from Iraq. So was it Bush or Iraq?
More Bush Than Iraq?
Comparing exit polling data from 04 and 06, there is a much bigger change in Americans' views of Bush than Iraq. In '04 when asked "how things are going" in Iraq, 52% said somewhat/very badly and 44% said somewhat/very good. This year, 56% disapprove -- a move of just 4 percent. Compare that with the Bush approval numbers -- a drop from 53% in 04 to just 42% in 06.
In Virginia's Senate race -- a state Republicans had to win -- Republican George Allen won among those who rated as "important" or "very important" these issues: the war of terror, the economy, taxes, same-sex marriage and abortion. Tell a candidate he is going to win on these issues and he'll expect to win handily. But Allen lost decisively on the Bush factor and Iraq.
So, the first analysis is that this election was a referendum on President Bush/Iraq. Nearly 2 out of 3 voters relied on national issues over local issues in casting their votes -- the Democrats succeeded in nationalizing the election on Bush and the war. It will be interesting to see how the President responds -- if he is willing to make a course correction.
Republican leadership judged
Secondly, voters rejected the Republican Congressional leadership. Congress's disapproval rating exceeded the President's in exit polling -- 61 percent. A majority of Americans disapproved of the Republicans' handling of Mark Foley.
In the end, Congressional Republicans have only themselves to blame for not carving out a clear agenda, not holding the line on spending and not cleaning up their own house. Congressional Republicans went along with too much spending, were embroiled in too much corruption and did not focus on grassroots conservative values. As one Republican strategist said, "We decided to try to spend money like Democrats, we decided not to reform or tackle big issues. And at the end of the day, the American voters said, 'Enough is enough.'"
Interestingly, it is likely that the Republicans in Congress come out of this election more conservative and more committed to the grassroots values of faith, family and freedom that launched the Revolution in 1994.
"Deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." It's a wonderful principle -- one that the President and every member of Congress should keep in the front of their minds in the coming days and weeks.

Will Amnesty Bill Trump State Immigration Laws?
By Steve Elliott, President
Grassfire.org
The real impact of illegal immigration is not felt in Washington, D.C. It is felt in the states -- the cities and towns across the nation being forced to foot the bill for the runaway costs and local impact of illegal immigration.
That’s why it should be no surprise that, with the Senate and the President pushing through an irresponsible blanket amnesty plan, our state legislatures are taking matters into their own hands. As USA Today and others are reporting, 30 states have passed legislation this year to crack down on illegal immigration to see if your state is taking action. (see USA Today link below).
State laws with teeth
These laws are wide-ranging -- from cracking down on employers hiring illegals to requiring state contractors to ensure that their employees are legal. There are laws against human trafficking, requiring citizenship or legal status to receive health benefits, making English the official language, establishing fines for counterfeiting documents, and more. One law in Texas has real economic teeth -- it prohibits businesses from deducting as a business expense wages paid to illegals.
In all, some 57 laws have been passed in these states, with more pending. I believe if left to our own devices, “we the people” would eventually solve this illegal immigration crisis. The 57 laws are evidence of that. Just one problem....
Senate Amnesty Bill Will Trump Your State
If the Senate amnesty bill passes, virtually all illegals will quickly migrate to some form of legal status, and ultimately the “path to citizenship” that the President is touting. Which brings us to one of the most damaging possible consequences of a federal amnesty bill -- what happens to the state efforts to control illegal immigration.
Once an illegal is granted legal status, how can state laws against illegals apply? It is clear that these laws will not apply to the 12-20 million who get legal status, or the tens of millions more who will be coming to our nation under the Senate amnesty plan.
Hidden danger of Senate amnesty plan
This is one of the least advertised dangers of the Senate amnesty bill. Yes, the very idea of granting amnesty to millions of illegals is repugnant. Yes, our porous borders are a national security threat. Yes, many communities are literally being torn apart by the influx of illegals. Yes, our hospitals and schools are being stretched to the breaking point.
As if these factors were not bad enough, our fearless leaders in the nation’s capital are trying to trump everything we can do at the state level and totally federalize another issue. Undoubtedly, this outrageous amnesty plan will concentrate more power at the federal level. Further emasculate our state and local governments and ultimately result in more taxes and spending at the federal level. Just to make the problem worse.
Once again, Washington, D.C., is on the wrong side of an issue, totally out of touch with what most Americans want. If the situation were reversed and 30 states had passed bills supporting amnesty, you can bet that the pressure would have already forced the House to cave in to the Senate amnesty plan. The President and some in the Senate are out of touch. But unless we stand strong, their amnesty plan will trump our state-level efforts to control this crisis.

Bogus Immigration Field Hearings?
We received this from a Grassfire team member, Dale Broze, who attended the field hearing in Laredo, Texas. We are going to press for more citizen involvement in upcoming hearings.
Steve Elliott, Grassfire
Gentlemen,
This morning, Friday, July 7, 2006, I attended the "Border Vulnerabilities and International Terrorism, Part II" Field Hearing before the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on International Relations, Subcommittee on International Terrorism and Nonproliferation, at the La Posada Hotel, here in Laredo, Texas.
It was a real dog and pony show. Five percent of the time was allocated to illegal immigrants and ninety-five percent of the time was allocated to three different panels of people with titles. It was NOT an open meeting and the public was NOT allowed to voice any opinion.
The first panel was composed of three Border Patrol Agent Chiefs. They covered their own significant issues. The second panel was composed of the Mayor of Laredo, the Mayor-Elect, Webb County Sheriff, Zapata County Sheriff, and the Acting Port Director. Third panel was composed of an Analyst for Domestic Security at the Congressional Research Service and the Managing Director of GAO's Forensic Audits and Special Investigations Unit (FSI), security experts testifying on how they smuggled enough "dirty bomb" material across our porous borders. The civilians there could see this "dirty bomb" stuff was only political scare tactics of the current administration. All who started to make any noise got the gavel. In total, ten people got to talk to the congressmen. Subjects covered were mainly in the realm of border security.
This committee literally dodged the illegal worker problem and will go back to Washington with all the data they have accumulated about border security from these Field Hearings and nothing about illegal workers will be brought forward. I believe that the illegal workers issue has already been decided. These Field Hearings are just a facade, because most of what was brought forward is available in government reports.
The issue of illegal aliens running our southern border was hardly touched by those with titles, even though people were chanting in the street outside about illegals. Even an illegal alien was protesting for rights with a megaphone and a truckload of day-workers was spotted by cameras. They did make our 6pm evening KGNS Pro8 News.
These Border Security Field Meetings were thought to be addressing the illegal workers problem are a sham and a total disrespect for the voters. This must be made more public and these public officials must be made to listen.
Years ago, the fine to businesses for hiring illegal workers was a mere 300 dollars and was scoffed at by business. Then it was raised to 3,000 dollars? What we should do is the same thing again! Add a zero to the fines, 30,000 dollars per would get their attention. Imagine how the whole issue would for the most part disappear!

House Listens To Citizens--Delays Senate Amnesty Push
by Steve Elliott, Grassfire.org President
House leadership just announced that they will not succumb to pressure from the Senate to fast-track the amnesty bill. Instead House Speaker Hastert says the House will conduct “field hearings” on the amnesty bill. Hastert said, “I'm not putting any timeline on this thing, but I think we need this thing done right."
This is great news. House leaders are saying that we must secure the borders first and are resisting the Senate rush to amnesty.

Latino says: "I want illegal latinos out"
This post came as a comment to the GrassfireBlog. Worth reading.
--Grassfire.org
Well let me start by saying that i am a latino. thats only because i was labeled as such by our government. i was born in the U.S as were my parents and grandparents. therefore i consider myself a true American the same way a person who is anglo, african,or an asian person would.
It seems that all of these illegal alien protests are directed towards latinos. lets not forget about Russian gangs, asian gangs, armenian gangs, ect. i do feel that it should be directed towards all races including latinos. illegal is just that "illegal", and anybody that is illegal should not be rewarded for commiting a crime.
I want illegal latinos out of my country just as much as any true American, maybe even more since other Americans look at me and think oh great "a wet back" . I am sick and tired of illegals ruining the pride and heritage of well established and respectable Americans of Latin decent. It drives me nuts to see cars around Los Angeles with foriegn flags flying, what the heck, if your country is so damn great then please by all means leave.
Activists and even the President have said that America needs illegals because Americans will not do the dirty work. i say bull, what about all of the lazy Americans on wellfare, section 8 housing, food stamps, medical, free school lunches, reduced utility rates? put them lazy people to work and get them off of the system and lets see how much money we can really save! VIVA LA RAZA, MY FOOT. ONE NATION UNDER GOD.

Part of the Terror we Make War Upon--2611
I am as disgusted as most American citizens that our Senate would approve this atrocious bill. The idea that our elected officials--a majority at any rate--would approve the amendment that America must "consult with Mexico" prior to erecting a fence should have been enough to have caused real Americans to oppose 2611, as it did Senator Kyle. I will not stop writing, emailing, faxing and phoning so long as there is hope of defeating this bill and stopping it from becoming law. I hope others are doing the same--we need everyone to let our Congress know in no uncertain terms that we are dead set against this Bill of Shame.

"Amnesty Republicans" Dividing America
By Steve Elliott, President
Grassfire.org
The Senate just passed it’s Hagel-Martinez Amnesty bill -- what many are calling the “No Illegal Alien Left Behind Act” -- by a final vote of 62-36.
If you have been watching the debate then you know that this outrageous bill has gotten worse by the hour. Right down to the final minutes before the vote, Senators were adding language that further undermines our nation. For example, the bill calls for “consultation” with Mexican authorities before the agreed-upon fence is built! Wanna bet there will be no fence, at least not before millions more illegals come across our border?
+ + Roll Call Vote
Go here to see the Roll Call vote on the final bill, go here and click on “votes” -- look under S.2611
http://www.senate.gov
+ + “Amnesty Republicans”
The fact is, the “Amnesty Republicans” are dividing America and destroying their party’s hopes in November, when they could have divided Democrats and destroyed their hopes by forcing them to vote on a border security/law enforcement bill. It was about all I could take this week while in Senate offices listening to staffers tell me “the Senator doesn’t think this is amnesty.” Barf.
Check some presidential hopefuls off the list: Frist (failed leadership), Brownback (what’s he thinking?), and especially McCain.
We need to make these Amnesty Republicans pay at the polls. Here’s your list of “Amnesty Republicans.” Remember -- without these Republicans there would be no amnesty bill!

+ + Don’t’ Lose Hope -- Battle Just Begun!
The battle to secure our borders and save our nation from an amnesty flood is far from over. After the Senate’s Memorial Day recess, the bill will go to House-Senate Conference Committee. Our team is already developing our strategy to embolden the House to oppose the Senate amnesty measure. We can defeat this, but it will take a rising tide of grassroots citizen outrage in the coming weeks.
For now, let me each Grassfire team member for the work you have done to ensure that the voice of citizens is heard in this debate. Grassfire team members literally flooded the Senate with hundreds of thousands of letters, faxes, phone calls (well over 350,000 in all!). We are now nearing 500,000 petitions thanks to you. Our “Stop The Invasion” billboards are quickly expanding from coast-to-coast and we will soon be announcing plans to take this effort to hundreds of communities across the nation.
We can win this fight for the very soul of our nation -- to secure our borders and stop the amnesty flood that the Senate has pushed today. Thank you again for the stand you are taking, and be watching for very important updates from Grassfire in the coming days.
